Part 1: Checking Your Home’s Suitability

Is an air source heat pump suitable for my home?

Air source heat pumps can be installed in many different types of UK homes, including detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, bungalows and some flats.

Suitability depends on several factors, including the size and heat loss of your property, its existing insulation, available outdoor space, current heating system and hot-water requirements.

Before recommending a system, a qualified installer should complete a detailed home survey and room-by-room heat-loss calculation. This allows the heat pump, radiators and other components to be correctly sized for your property.

Even if changes are required, such as upgrading some radiators or improving insulation, this does not necessarily mean your home is unsuitable.

Will a heat pump keep my home warm during cold UK winters?

Yes. A correctly designed and installed heat pump can provide reliable heating throughout the year, including during cold winter weather.

Heat pumps continue extracting heat from the outside air even when outdoor temperatures fall below freezing. The important factor is whether the system has been properly sized for your home’s heating requirements.

Unlike a boiler, which often delivers short bursts of very hot water, a heat pump usually runs for longer periods at a lower temperature. This provides a steadier and more consistent level of warmth.

A room-by-room heat-loss calculation should be completed before installation to make sure the heat pump and radiators can keep every part of the home comfortable during colder conditions.

Can a heat pump be installed in an older or poorly insulated property?

Yes. Heat pumps can work effectively in older properties, including homes with solid walls, traditional construction or limited insulation.

However, a property that loses heat quickly will require more energy to remain warm, regardless of whether it is heated by a boiler or a heat pump. Improving loft insulation, draught proofing, glazing or wall insulation can reduce heat loss and improve comfort and running efficiency.

A home does not always need to be fully insulated before a heat pump can be installed. The installer should assess the property as it currently stands and explain any improvements that would be beneficial.

The system must then be designed around the home’s actual heat loss, rather than relying only on its age, size or Energy Performance Certificate rating.

Do I need underfloor heating, or can I use my existing radiators?

Underfloor heating is not essential. Air source heat pumps can work with radiators, underfloor heating or a combination of both.

Because heat pumps generally circulate water at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, the radiators must be able to release enough heat to warm each room. Some existing radiators may already be suitable, while others may need to be replaced with larger or higher-output models.

Wet underfloor heating works particularly well with heat pumps because it provides a large surface area through which heat can be distributed. However, installing it throughout an existing property is rarely necessary.

Your installer should assess each room individually and recommend only the changes required for the system to perform properly.

Will any of my radiators or pipework need to be replaced?

Possibly, but this will depend on the existing heating system and the results of the home survey.

Some radiators may already be large enough to work efficiently with a heat pump. Others may need to be replaced with larger double-panel or higher-output radiators so they can heat the room effectively using lower-temperature water.

The installer should also inspect the pipework to confirm that it can carry the required flow of water. Smaller pipework, including some microbore systems, does not automatically make a property unsuitable, but sections may need upgrading if they would restrict the system’s performance.

Any recommended radiator or pipework changes should be clearly identified and included in the quotation before the installation begins.

Part 2: Installation, Costs and Everyday Use

How much does a heat pump installation cost after the grant?

The amount you pay will depend on your property and the work required to install a correctly designed system. Factors include the size of the heat pump, your home’s heating requirements, the number of radiators that need upgrading, pipework alterations and whether a new hot-water cylinder is required.

Eligible homeowners in England and Wales may be able to reduce the cost through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The available grant is an upfront deduction from your quotation, rather than something you have to claim back after installation.

Following a detailed home survey, you should receive a clear quotation explaining what is included and identifying any additional work required.

Will a heat pump reduce my heating bills?

A well-designed heat pump can reduce your heating bills significantly, and many households do see meaningful savings when the system is correctly specified and installed.

It is true that the industry has received some negative attention, often due to poorly designed or incorrectly installed systems that do not perform as expected. However, when a heat pump is properly sized, matched to the property and set up to run efficiently, it can deliver reliable performance and lower running costs over time.

Running costs will still depend on factors such as the heat loss of your home, your electricity tariff, your preferred indoor temperature and the type of heating being replaced. Homes switching from oil, LPG, direct electric heating or older storage heaters often see the greatest benefit.

Correct system design is essential. A properly sized heat pump operating at lower water temperatures will typically use less electricity and provide more consistent comfort than a system that has not been designed correctly.

We only recommend and install heat pumps where we are confident that the system will perform efficiently and that the expected savings justify the investment.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

A typical air source heat pump installation can take 3-7 working days, although the exact timescale will depend on the property and the amount of work required.

A straightforward installation may involve fitting the outdoor unit, installing or replacing the hot-water cylinder, connecting the system and making selected radiator changes. Projects involving extensive pipework, multiple radiator replacements or other property improvements can take longer.

We will explain the planned schedule before work begins, including when your existing heating will be disconnected and when the new system is expected to be operational.

We will agree a full installation programme with you before the work starts.

Will I be without heating or hot water during the installation?

There will normally be a period when your existing heating and hot-water system must be switched off while the new equipment is connected. Installers will usually plan this work to keep the interruption as short as reasonably possible.

The length of the disruption will depend on the complexity of the installation and whether the existing boiler, cylinder, radiators or pipework need to be removed or altered.

You will be told in advance when heating and hot water will be unavailable, allowing you to make suitable arrangements. Once the installation is complete, the system must be tested, commissioned and demonstrated before it is handed over to you.

How noisy is an air source heat pump?

Modern air source heat pumps produce some sound from the fan and compressor while operating, but they should not create an unreasonable disturbance when correctly selected and positioned.

The amount of sound you hear will depend on the heat-pump model, how hard it is working and where it is installed. Positioning the unit directly beneath bedroom windows or close to neighbouring living spaces may be avoidable, depending on the property.

As part of the survey and system design, the installer should assess the proposed location and complete any noise calculations required under planning and MCS rules.

You can also ask to see the manufacturer’s sound information for the recommended unit before agreeing to the installation.

Where will the outdoor unit and hot-water cylinder be installed?

The outdoor unit requires a suitable position with sufficient airflow and space for servicing. Its location should also consider noise, nearby windows, boundaries, access and the distance from the internal heating system.

If you currently have a combi boiler, your new system will usually require a hot-water cylinder. This may be installed in an airing cupboard, utility room, loft, garage or another suitable indoor space, depending on the property and the type of cylinder selected.

Our surveyor will discuss the available options with you before designing the system. The final positions should provide reliable performance while avoiding unnecessary pipe runs and disruption.

Part 3: Boiler Upgrade Scheme (Government Grant)

Am I eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available for eligible properties in England and Wales. It provides an upfront government grant towards the cost of replacing an existing fossil-fuel heating system with an eligible low-carbon heating system, such as an air source heat pump.

Eligibility depends on factors including the location and ownership of the property, the heating system being replaced and the type of heat pump being installed. Most existing homes can be considered, including owner-occupied properties, second homes and privately rented properties. Most new-build homes are excluded, although some self-build properties may qualify.

As part of our initial assessment, we will check whether your property appears to meet the scheme requirements and explain the funding available before you proceed.

How do I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You do not normally need to complete the grant application yourself. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led, which means our team will manage the application process on your behalf.

Once we have surveyed your property, confirmed that the proposed installation is eligible and agreed the quotation with you, we will submit the voucher application to Ofgem.

Ofgem will then contact you directly to confirm that you own the property and that you have authorised us to apply. You must complete this confirmation before the application can progress.

We will manage the remaining administration, install and commission the system, and provide the information required to redeem the voucher once the work has been completed.

Do I need to pay the grant amount upfront and claim it back?

No. You should not have to pay the grant amount upfront and recover it later.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides an upfront contribution towards the installation. We will show the full installation cost and deduct the applicable grant directly from your quotation, leaving you to pay the remaining balance.

Once the installation has been completed and commissioned, we will submit the required evidence to Ofgem and redeem the voucher ourselves.

Our team will explain the grant deduction, payment schedule and any conditions before you agree to proceed, so you will know exactly how much you are expected to pay.

How much will I receive towards my heat pump installation?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently provides a grant of £7,500 towards the cost of installing an eligible air source heat pump in England or Wales.

We will check that your property and proposed installation meet the scheme requirements, manage the application on your behalf and deduct the full grant from your installation quotation. This means you will only need to pay the remaining balance, rather than paying the full cost and claiming the grant back later.

From 21 July 2026, the grant will increase to £9,000 for eligible off-gas-grid properties replacing an oil or LPG heating system. This increased amount will be available until 31 March 2027. Other eligible air source heat pump installations will continue to receive the standard £7,500 grant.

Do I need to improve my insulation before I can receive the grant?

You do not normally need to complete loft or cavity-wall insulation work before qualifying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

However, insulation can still make a significant difference to how efficiently your home retains heat and may help reduce running costs. During our survey, we will assess the property’s heat loss and explain whether any insulation or draught-proofing improvements would be beneficial.

We will design the heat pump system around the property’s actual heating requirements and check that the proposed installation meets the current scheme rules.

You can also remain eligible if you have previously received separate funding to improve your property’s energy efficiency.
